“It was an amazing experience,” Peiper said. “I saw many things I’d never seen before. It took me 30 minutes to realize that the ‘abandoned’ buildings along the road actually were inhabited. They were often smaller than a garage, single-storied, and made of decaying concrete, rotting wood and corrugated steel.”
“The best part of the trip were the relationships we formed,” said Peiper. “Only two or three of the villagers could speak English, but through the smiles and excitement on their faces, we knew they appreciated what we were doing.”
